EFFINGHAM - St. Anthony of Padua schools inducted their first Hall of Fame members June 13 during the St. Anthony Feast Day Celebration at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Effingham. Seven academic and 30 athletic awards were presented throughout the evening with over 400 people in attendance. During the ceremony, Msgr. Leo Enlow, pastor, was presented, by Father Daren Zehnle, parochial vicar, a pontifical blessing scroll from Pope Benedict XVI on St. Anthony's sesquicentennial celebration.
A 100-year-old quilt, owned by Dick and Anna Marie Flach, was displayed. The quilt depicts the St. Anthony Parish families of 1900, in hand-stitched names. A copy of a picture of St. Anthony Church was signed by parishioners and will be hung in the parish center.
The Hall of Fame recipients are:
In the academic category, alumni Margaret Barlage, class of 1927 and Ruth Barlage, class of 1929.
In the staff contribution category, Robert Broeker, a social studies teacher and coach at St. Anthony High School for 23years; and Sister Jane Marie Hotze, who served St. Anthony High School for 14 years, five as development director and nine as the school's principal.
In the category of Friends of St. Anthony, Norbert "Bud" and Sophie Althoff, Dr. John and Ingid Kay, and Dr. Henry and Esther Poterucha.
In the category of athletics: the late Msgr. John Goff, pastor of St. Anthony from 1945-1968, who supervised the construction of classrooms, a library and the grade school gym, which was named after him.
Also inducted into the athletic Hall of Fame were members of the 1955-56 basketball team: Rich Stephan ('57), Hank Wiedman ('56), Charlie Gebben ('58), Jerry Schutzbach ('57), Bob Mihlbachler ('57), Chuck Henkelman ('56), Ron Kabbes ('56), Bob Ludwig ('56), Mike Sehy ('57), Lou Buennemeyer ('58), Ray Nuxoll ('57), Don Kabbes ('56, deceased), Frank Hoelscher ('57), Jerry Tegenkamp ('57), Bill Martens ('57), and Coach Jim Belz. This team was the first St. Anthony basketball team to make the IHSA Sweet Sixteen finishing with a 29-2 record. They won the National Trail regular and tournament championships the IHSA regional and sectional championships.
The final inductees to the athletic Hall of Fame were members of the 1969-70 basketball team: Phil Kinkelaar ('70, deceased), Dale Kinkelaar ('71), John Miller ('70), Dave Brumleve ('70), Jerry Bierman ('72), Mike Borries ('72), Mike Dust ('71), Mike Wente ('70), Hank Stephens ('70), Don Althoff ('70), Kent Buehnerkemper ('71), Bill Martin ('70), Steve Koester ('71), and Coach John Keller (deceased). The team finished with a 28-3 record, won the National Trail regular and tournament championships and became the first and only NTC team to make the IHSA Elite 8 in the single class system.
