Michael Brendt coROME — Seminarian Michael A. Berndt of St. Francis Solanis Parish in Quincy was conferred the Ministry of Lector Jan. 15 in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception in Rome.

As part of the rite, Bishop Paul Tighe, adjunct-secretary to the Pontifical Council for Culture, placed the lectionary in the hands of each candidate which contained the readings used in the celebration of the Mass for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Bishop Tighe challenged Berndt and 49 other seminarians in their first year of formation for the priesthood to “take this book of holy Scripture and be faithful in handing on the word of God, so that it may grow strong in the hearts of his people.”

Berndt is a first year theology student at Pontifical North American College where fellow Quincyan and diocesan priest Father Peter Harman serves as rector of the American seminary in Rome.
