ST. LOUIS — A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated Jan. 7 in Dallas, for Sister Kathleen Barnes, OSU, who died peacefully Dec. 1, 2016 in New Orleans. She served in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.
The daughter of George Sanderson Barnes and Agnes Phelan, she was born Jan. 16, 1921, in Little Rock, Ark. Her father’s job kept the family traveling throughout her childhood and she attended eight different elementary schools. She received her secondary education at Ursuline Academy in Dallas, graduating in May 1938.
Sister Kathleen entered the Ursuline Sisters in January 1939 and professed her vows in July 1941. She received her bachelor’s degree in math from St. Louis University, a master’s degree in math from the University of Notre Dame, and a master’s degree in religious studies from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
Her ministries were teaching, school administration, parish adult education and Hispanic ministry in Springfield; Dallas, Galveston, San Antonio and Laredo, Texas; and Kirkwood and Clayton, Mo.
In Springfield, Sister Kathleen was treasurer of Springfield College in Illinois from 1974-1978. In 2008 she joined the Ursulines’ Queen of Peace Healthcare Community in Alton, where she lived until 2014, when she moved to Our Lady of Wisdom in New Orleans.
Her five siblings preceded her in death: sisters Agnes Barnes, Dorothy Barnes Johnson and Margaret Barnes, and brothers George Barnes and Robert Barnes. She is survived by a number of their children.
