House Bill 40 looms in Illinois House

Bishop Thomas John Paprocki issued the above letter to alert pastors and parishioners in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois of the urgency in contacting their lawmaker to stop House Bill 40 from passing.

The Catholic Conference of Illinois notes that HB40 recycles a bill that was introduced in previous General Assemblies that would force public funding of abortion.

“The state has not had a budget in nearly two years and can’t fund essential services,” said Robert Gilligan, CCI executive director. “Now, lawmakers are considering using tax money to pay for elective abortions for Medicaid recipients and state employees. Where is the logic in that?”

Asst. Majority Leader and chief sponsor Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) says HB40 answers rumblings in Washington to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

“After repeated threats ... to strip abortion rights away from women, this legislation is necessary to safeguard a woman’s right to make decisions that affect her personal health in Illinois,” said Feigenholtz.
