Franciscan sisters to celebrate on Aug. 15

The Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George will celebrate the profession of vows and the reception into the novitiate of several sisters during a Mass on Aug. 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Bishop George J. Lucas, the main celebrant, will be joined by other bishops and several priests.

Funeral Mass held for Father Rebert

"Let Your Light Shine" will be the theme of the Springfield Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) convention, which will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Country Inn and Suites by Carlson in Quincy. The Quincy Deanery will serve as host of the convention.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Over 2,500 black Catholics were in Buffalo, N.Y., July 12-15 to celebrate their faith and each other at the 10th National Black Catholic Congress, held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. The theme of the congress was "Christ is With Us: Celebrating the Gifts of the Sacraments." The congress was hosted by the Diocese of Buffalo's Office of Black Ministry.

Priest offers audio of weekly homily

Even though serving in the military halfway around the world, a soldier with access to the Internet can watch Mass as it was celebrated that week in his or her home Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. Father Bill Kessler, pastor of the two Calhoun County parishes of Blessed Trinity and St. Francis of Assisi, is the priest celebrant at the Mass. It is his technology skills plus commitment to the project which makes the Mass video available on the Internet.

JERSEYVILLE - St. Francis Xavier Parish celebrated its 150th anniversary on July 1. The sesquicentennial celebration included a potluck luncheon with games for children after the 10 a.m. Mass.

QU to host Marriage Encounter Weekend

Sister Josine Mondloch, OSF, was among 46 women and men recognized as Franciscan peacemakers at the 41st Annual Franciscan Federation Conference, held July 9-12 in Minneapolis, Minn.

As Clerics of St. Viator provincials from around the world gather in Kankakee at the beginning of August to celebrate the 125th anniversary of their community's American province, there is a trace of sadness in the Springfield diocese, where Viatorians have served in ministry for nearly eight decades.

QUINCY - Father Kenneth Capalbo, OFM, has been named chairman of the Quincy University Board of Trustees, replacing chairman William Metzinger whose term expired in May.

CC food pantry appeals for donations

Shelves at Catholic Charities' Holy Family Food Pantry in Springfield are low and desperately in need of donations to help struggling families in the city and surrounding area.

Thirty youth participants from 14 parishes attended a diocesan Christian Leadership Institute (CLI) that ran June 28 through July 3 at Villa Maria Catholic Life Center on Lake Springfield. The students, who are entering their freshman through junior years in high school, were there to learn leadership and communication skills, community building and to begin to understand group dynamics, said Becky Bauerle.

Diocese thanked for contribution

Bishop George J. Lucas has received a letter thanking the people of the diocese for a $64,000 contribution to the Jerusalem Mother Church for the 2007 Good Friday collection.
Five Illinois State Knights of Columbus Council's from District 76 have been recognized as Illinois Spirit Award winners for outstanding programs during the 2006-2007 fraternal year. The announcement was made at the Knights of Columbus Illinois State Convention held recently in Springfield. Only 56 out of 420 Councils in Illinois earned these distinctions.
