Two diocesan seminarians spent 10 weeks of their summer break at the Institute for Priestly Formation (IPF) at Creighton University, a Jesuit Catholic University in Omaha, Neb. Steve Thompson and Joel Robert Heine, both who are about to enter their second year of theology at Mundelein Seminary, were in intensive spiritual formation from May 29 through Aug. 4.

Freshman enrollment up 46 percent at QU

First-year student enrollment at Quincy University stands at 235, up 46 percent from last year's fall 2006 total of 161, according to QU executive vice president Patricia Laytham. This year's number is also an increase from fall of 2005, when first-year student enrollment stood at 202.
Seven men are being inducted into the 2007 Springfield Chapter Knights of Columbus on Oct. 27. A Mass, dinner and the induction will take place at Bethalto Council #4688.
Thanks to the generosity of Michael Thoresen and The Thoresen Foundation, a grass lot next to the old parish rectory across the street from the school has been transformed into a playground filled with creative and fun equipment.

Celebration planned for long-married couples

Melissa Blankestyn - now officially Sister Melissa - completed her candidacy and was accepted as a novice by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield during the Rite of Initiation Aug. 7 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield. She now begins a two-year period of prayer, study, and integration into the life of the Springfield Dominican congregation.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Over 2,500 black Catholics were in Buffalo, N.Y., July 12-15 to celebrate their faith and each other at the 10th National Black Catholic Congress, held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. The theme of the congress was "Christ is With Us: Celebrating the Gifts of the Sacraments." The congress was hosted by the Diocese of Buffalo's Office of Black Ministry.

Priest offers audio of weekly homily

Even though serving in the military halfway around the world, a soldier with access to the Internet can watch Mass as it was celebrated that week in his or her home Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. Father Bill Kessler, pastor of the two Calhoun County parishes of Blessed Trinity and St. Francis of Assisi, is the priest celebrant at the Mass. It is his technology skills plus commitment to the project which makes the Mass video available on the Internet.

JERSEYVILLE - St. Francis Xavier Parish celebrated its 150th anniversary on July 1. The sesquicentennial celebration included a potluck luncheon with games for children after the 10 a.m. Mass.
