Family memories attached to fragile red, white and blue Christmas ornament

Just before Harold and Norb Wagner were to leave to go overseas during World War II, their parents Harry and Rose Wagner arranged to have this family photo taken. Shown here are (front row, l-r) twins Ron and Roy, Rose, Janet, Jerry, Harry, Carol and Jim; and (back row, l-r) Paul, Ralph, Mary, Harold, Norb, Dee and Ruth. This is the only family picture taken with all 13 children. “It was supposed to be an outside photo, but it was a hot day and things were not going well. You know, the sun was in someone’s eyes, etc.,” says Carol Wagner Wong. “So my mother said, ‘Get in the car. Let’s just go somewhere and have it taken inside.’ Harold already had his sailor uniform, so he wore it. Norb didn’t have his uniform yet. As fate would have it, Norb never came home again.”ROBINSON — Every Christmas, when Carol Wagner Wong decorates her Christmas tree, she has one ornament that brings back bittersweet childhood memories.
