On the Friday within the Octave of Easter, Bishop Thomas John Paprocki ordained four seminarians to the transitional diaconate during an evening Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield.

Hundreds of people were at the April 1 Mass to support Michael Friedel, Ronnie “Ron” Lorilla, Rafal Pyrchla and Wayne Stock as they received the sacrament of holy orders, ordaining them to the order of deacon as a transitional step toward being a priest for the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.

On Friday, April 1 Bishop Thomas John Paprocki ordained four seminarians to the transitional diaconate during 6 p.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield. During the last weeks of Lent, Michael Friedel, Ronnie Lorilla, Rafal Pyrchla and Wayne Stock took time to share their thoughts on their upcoming ordinations.

Over 500 people from all around the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois were at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on the evening of March 22 as Bishop Thomas John Paprocki concelebrated the chrism Mass.

The chrism Mass is held annually in cathedrals all over the world during Holy Week. It is during this Mass that priests, who gather with their bishop in the sanctuary to concelebrate, publicly renew the promises they made at their ordinations.

The people of St. Joseph Parish in Benld will celebrate the 100-year parish jubilee on Saturday, April 9. Bishop Thomas John Paprocki will celebrate Mass at 4 p.m. Msgr. Lawrence Auda, pastor emeritus; Father Michael Haag, pastor; Father Marianna Sathuluri, parochial vicar; Father Patrick Gibbons, Father Charles Edwards and Father James Neuman will be concelebrating. Father Brian Alford will be master of ceremonies at the Mass and Deacon Sean Caveny will serve as deacon. A dinner (requiring reservations) to be held at JoDanni’s Amore Restaurant in Benld will follow the Mass.

Church to celebrate Easter triduum

During Holy Week, which begins on Palm Sunday (March 20), Lent ends and the Easter triduum begins. The triduum is a single three-day celebration of the Paschal mystery. It opens with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening, has its center in the Easter Vigil and closes with Vespers — or Evening Prayer — on the Sunday of the Resurrection.

One weekend a month for the past several months, the diocesan Office for Marriage and Family Life in conjunction with the Retirement Peace Project have been offering Retirement Peace University sessions for individuals or couples over age 50. There is still time to sign up for the next weekend session, which is scheduled to run March 19-20 at the Catholic Pastoral Center, 1615 W. Washington St., in Springfield.

Over the first weekend of Lent, 290 people from 62 places in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois came to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to take part in the Rite of Election of Catechumens and of the Call to Continuing Conversion of Baptized Catholics. They were accompanied by the priests, deacons, sponsors, godparents, families and friends who traveled with them. Those who came to the see city on Sunday dealt with less than desirable road conditions as several inches of snow fell that day, followed by freezing rain.
