Prescription for happiness: Turn hearts to positive teachings
October 06, 2013
In my series on the seven deadly or capital sins, so far I have discussed acedia (also called sloth), greed and anger. Today we will look at the deadly sin of lust, which, like the other capital sins, can be a simple yet powerful drive remaining and festering in our heart, but it can also manifest itself in some pretty rotten behavior.
God will judge whether our anger was justified or sinful

Continuing my reflections on the seven deadly or capital sins, today I will discuss the deadly sin of anger. In its discussion of anger, the Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “By recalling the commandment, ‘You shall not kill,’ our Lord asked for peace of heart and denounced murderous anger and hatred as immoral. ... If anger reaches the point of a deliberate desire to kill or seriously wound a neighbor, it is gravely against charity; it is a mortal sin” (#2302).

Seven deadly sins often deal with attitude of the heart
August 25, 2013
The key to being a committed Christian is the experience of conversion, that is, Christ's call to turn away from sin and to be faithful to the Gospel. That may sound simple enough, but the very first step of recognizing sin itself is sometimes hard to do. The devil is deceptive, masking sinfulness in an aura that may appear desirable and even respectable, but it is really only evil masquerading under a false façade. We can rationalize and convince ourselves that the things we do out of selfishness are really being done for noble purposes.
Understand rich Catholic teaching on transmission of human life

Forty-five years ago, on July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI issued his landmark encyclical letter, Humanae Vitae, (On the Transmission of Human Life.) It is a magnificent description of the "most serious role in which married people collaborate freely and responsibly with God the Creator." He described this role of parents as being a "source of great joy to them, even though it sometimes entails many difficulties and hardships."
World Youth Day strengthens young people’s witness to Christ

Among the millions of participants at the closing Mass for World Youth Day on Sunday, July 28, in Rio di Janiero, Brazil, will be 35 pilgrims from the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois from our parishes in Beardstown, Effingham and Marshall. Travelling with them are Fathers Chris Brey, David Hoefler, Brian Alford and me. The main celebrant for this Mass will be Pope Francis himself, returning to his native South America for his first World Youth Day.

Slouching Towards Gomorrah: Modern Liberalism and American Decline, is a book written in 1996 by the late Robert H. Bork. Bork served as a Yale Law School professor, Solicitor General, Acting Attorney General, and a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The title of the book is in reference to the biblical city of Gomorrah, which God destroyed along with Sodom for their wickedness (see Genesis 19). According to traditional interpretation, the sin of Sodom was homosexuality, which is therefore known as sodomy.

My heart is still pounding after watching the Blackhawks beat the Boston Bruins by scoring two goals 17 seconds apart in the final minute and 16 seconds of the deciding game to win the Stanley Cup, hockey's most cherished trophy. This is the Blackhawks' second hockey playoff championship in the past four years! Congratulations!
