Keeping sports in proper Christian perspective
February 08, 2014
Last Sunday, millions of Americans sat down in front of their television sets to watch one of the most popular events of the year, the Super Bowl. Millions more around the world tuned in to watch the game. This year, the average cost of a 30-second television commercial was about $4 million, or $133,000 per second!
Three things we really need for true happiness
January 26, 2014
The names of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones do not usually come to mind when one thinks of prophets, but their 1969 song, You Can't Always Get What You Want, is certainly prophetic. Coming at the end of the decade, the song has been described as a reflection on three major themes of the 1960s: sex, politics and drugs. The key insight is in the line sung by Jagger, "No, you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need."
Take up challenge of Pope Francis and give up gossip

The beginning of a new year is a time for resolutions, trying to lead a more virtuous life or break the habit of a pernicious vice. The problem with many new year's resolutions is that people often tend to lose their willpower or simply forget about them very quickly. That can easily be seen by the increased attendance at health clubs for several days after the first of the year, but within a few weeks the numbers are back to usual!
Nurture a grateful heart for blessings of past year
December 29, 2013
The spirit of joy emanates from the Nativity of our Savior Jesus Christ, whose birth we continue to celebrate during this Christmas season. Although the commercial world of retail sales has put away its Christmas promotions until next fall, we in the church are actually now in the midst of our Christmas celebrations. While the secular world was giving us holiday music and seasonal hype to promote shopping, we were preparing our hearts for the birth of Jesus during the liturgical season of Advent.
Putting values and faith into practice on football field
December 15, 2013
We should all be very proud of the Sacred Heart-Griffin Cyclone Football Team, not just because they won the state Class 5A football title by defeating Montini Catholic High School of Lombard in the championship game on Nov. 30 at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb by a score of 38-28, although we certainly do congratulate them on this achievement.
We pray for deliverance from the devil’s evil influences
December 01, 2013
We are gathered here today in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for a special Holy Hour before the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament to participate in Prayers of Supplication and Exorcism in Reparation for the Sin of Same-Sex Marriage. I wish to preface my reflections by saying that I am conducting this prayer service and am speaking to you now with great reluctance. I did not seek to enter any controversy and I don’t relish being part of one. But I have given this matter a great deal of thought and prayer, which has led me to the conviction that God is calling me to speak out and conduct these prayers.
Sin of pride is said to be origin of all deadly sins
November 17, 2013
The last but not least of the seven capital sins for our consideration is the deadly sin of pride. The glossary in the Catechism of the Catholic Church defines pride as “undue self-esteem or self-love, which seeks attention and honor and sets oneself in competition with God.”

Prescription for happiness: Turn hearts to positive teachings
October 06, 2013
In my series on the seven deadly or capital sins, so far I have discussed acedia (also called sloth), greed and anger. Today we will look at the deadly sin of lust, which, like the other capital sins, can be a simple yet powerful drive remaining and festering in our heart, but it can also manifest itself in some pretty rotten behavior.
