Springfield and Belleville dioceses partner for Wading Deeper 2010

Written by

The Springfield and Belleville dioceses will be the cosponsors of Wading Deeper 2010 — “Discernment: Conversion’s Partner in Christian Initiation” on Friday, July 30 and Saturday, July 31 at Holy Family Parish in Litchfield.

According to Eliot Kapitan, director of the Springfield diocese’s Office for Worship and the Catechumenate, the Wading Deeper workshop series engages catechumenate ministers in a deeper immersion in the vision, method, and ministry required by the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It intends to go beyond a beginning level and addresses issues raised by persons and parishes with some experience in catechumenal formation.

Eleven workshops have been held over the past 13 years. Catechist certification credit is granted by each diocese for attendees. Suitable books and materials will be available for sale at reduced prices.

The presenter for this year’s workshop will be Sister Donna Steffen, SC. A Sister of Charity, she ministers by offering spiritual direction and leading retreats. She is a team member with the North American Forum on the Catechumenate, has worked with initiation in parishes, and has presented initiation workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and for the military in Germany and Italy.

The author of Discerning Disciples: Listening for God’s Voice in Christian Initiation (Liturgy Training Publications), she is one of the authors of Foundations in Faith (Resources in Christian Living) and the author of Handbook on Prayer in this series.

“Sister Donna Steffen was on the presenting team for the Beginnings Plus Institute held in September 2009 hosted by the Diocese of Belleville and cosponsored by our own diocese,” Kapitan said. “I am delighted that she is returning for this more focused worship on Christian discernment.

“Sacramental discernment is much more than one face-to-face meeting with a candidate,” he said. “Sister Donna will help us understand the necessary role discernment has throughout the entire sacramental formation process.”

Kapitan said many people would benefit from attending this year’s Wading Deeper. “This workshop is not just for RCIA team members,” he said. “Since both the Roman and national Directories for Catechesis state that the baptismal catechumenate is the inspiration for all catechesis, this workshop will help all ministers involved in parish sacramental formation.”

A registration flyer will be available during the Easter Season. For more information, contact Vicki Walker in the Office for Worship and the Catechumenate at (217) 698-8500, ext. 166 or e-mail her at .
