The former Elizabeth Lucille Westenberger was born in Springfield on Nov. 11, 1920, the daughter of John Henry and Naomi G. Clayton Westenberger. She entered the congregation on Sept. 8, 1938 and professed her religious vows on June 13, 1941.
Sister M. Elizabeth was a graduate of St. John’s School of Nursing and served the community as a pediatric nurse and a contagious disease nurse in hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin. She also served in the St. Francis Convent medication room and as sacristan in the St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia Martinez and Loretta Flesch; and three brothers, Gerhard, James and John Henry Westenberger.
She is survived by two sisters, Frances Caillier and Helen Bleser, both of Torrance, Calif., and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and her Franciscan sisters with whom she shared her life for over 72 years.
The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial was celebrated April 14 in St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel, with Father Vincent Callahan, OFM, presiding. Burial was in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.
Staab Funeral Home, Springfield, was in charge of arrangements.
