Obituary - Sister Jean Marie Deleery, OSU

Sister Jean Marie Deleery, OSUALTON — Sister Jean Marie Deleery, OSU, died Sept. 19 at the Ursulines’ Queen of Peace infirmary in Alton.

She was born July 28, 1926, in Galveston, Texas. She entered the Ursuline Sisters on July 15, 1944, and made her vows on Jan. 16, 1947. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Fontbonne College and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Prairie View A & M University.

A much loved teacher and school principal, she served in Springfield and Alton: Dallas and Galveston, Texas; Kirkwood, Mo., and New Orleans, La. She taught sixth, seventh and eighth grades at Blessed Sacrament School in Springfield from 1958 to 1961. After surviving Hurricane Katrina while in a hospital in New Orleans, she moved to Queen of Peace in Alton in 2005.

The funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 23, in the Ursuline Convent Chapel in Alton, with Father Mark Dean, OMI, presiding. Memorials may be made to the Ursuline Sisters of the Central Province Retirement Fund, 353 S. Sappington Road, St. Louis, MO 63122.
