Sister Peter Damian Chiang, 87, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, died Jan. 6 at St. Francis Convent, Springfield.
Sister Peter Damian, the former Ching Mei Chiang, was born in Hwimin, China, on June 29, 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Teresa Chiang. She entered the congregation on Oct. 4, 1947, and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1950.
Sister Peter Damian served the community in hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin. She served as a missionary at Star of the Sea Clinic in Taiwan from 1976 through 1983. From 1984 through 2002, she was an EKG technician at St. John’s Hospital.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark Chiang and the Rev. Sebastian Chiang.
She is survived by a great nephew, Father Joseph Jiang of St. Louis, and her Franciscan sisters with whom she shared her life for over 63 years.
The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial was celebrated by Father Vincent Callahan, OFM, on Jan. 8 in St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel at St. Francis Convent. Burial was in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.
Staab Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
