Sister Mary Emilia Roth, OP, 90, died Saturday, May 24, at Sacred Heart Convent, the motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield.
Sister Mary Emilia was born in Hamburg, on Jan. 30, 1918 to Ellen (Corbett) and Adam Roth and joined the Dominican Sisters in 1935, making her profession of vows in 1937. Sister Mary Emilia was a graduate of St. Ambrose College with a bachelor's degree in English and the University of Illinois earning a master's degree in education.
Sister Mary Emilia taught and administered in Catholic schools across the United States for 52 years, including, in the Springfield diocese, Cathedral School in Springfield, St. Francis School in Jerseyville, Our Saviour School in Jacksonville, St. Kevin School in East Alton, and finally Sacred Heart School in Granite City. Before retiring to Sacred Heart Convent in 1996, Sister Mary Emilia spent seven years helping local missions.
Sister Mary Emilia was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Leo and Adam and sister Marie. She is survived by four nephews, five nieces, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she lived and ministered for 73 years.
Services were held May 28, 2008 in Springfield, with internment in Calvary Cemetery. Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
