Seventy-three women from throughout the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois were honored as “Women of Distinction” at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception June 1 by Bishop Thomas John Paprocki. The annual award ceremony was followed by a luncheon at the Northfield Center where the ladies, their families, their parish priests, deanery spiritual advisors and the 2019 diocesan scholarship winners were celebrated.
Sponsored by the Springfield in Illinois Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, the Women of Distinction Program was started to honor a lady from each parish for her dedication and outstanding work within her parish. Each parish has the opportunity to name one woman per year. This is the eighth year for this award ceremony. This program was initiated to not only honor special ladies but to engender communications among the various parish women’s groups within the diocese.
Similar programs exist throughout the United States. Dioceses, deaneries and parish women’s groups fall under the auspices of the National Council of Catholic Women, created by the U.S. Bishops in 1920. Our Lady of Good Counsel is the patroness of each of these groups.
