Totus Tuus program launches in June, July across diocese
After a year of the pandemic, children are probably itching to get out of the house, socialize, and have fun. Parents are probably just as eager to have their children try some new experiences. This summer, the Office for Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois is excited to have Totus Tuus, a fun and faith-filled experience, coming to several parishes across the diocese in June and July.
Totus Tuus is a weeklong Catholic youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness, and eucharistic worship. The program inspires in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and an openness to their vocation.
Teams of four travel to a different parish each week, hosting a five-day catechetical program for grades 1-12. The week is filled with faith, fun, and friendship. There are messy games and crazy skits, in addition to prayer, learning, and the sacraments. College-age teachers provide an authentic witness to the students. There are still some openings for parish hosts. If you do not see a parish near you, please contact your parish to discuss hosting the program closer to your area.
June 12-19: St. Isidore the Farmer in Dieterich and St. Mary in Paris
June 19-26: Two parish openings
June 26-July 3: Our Lady of the Holy Spirit in Mt. Zion, one parish opening
July 10-17: St. Mary in Alton and Holy Family in Granite City
July 17-24: St. John the Evangelist in Carrollton and St. Katharine Drexel in Springfield
July 24-31: St. Cecilia in Glen Carbon, one parish opening
“Totus Tuus is a fun and interactive way for young people to learn about the faith and see positive witnesses of our faith in their peers and group leaders,” said Tony Cerveny, director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. “Having such a positive experience will help each child grow in their relationship with Christ, which is what ultimately matters.”
“I have seen firsthand how programs like Totus Tuus light a fire of faith in young people,” said Sister M. Veritas Wilks, FSGM, director of Youth and Women’s Ministry. “The laughter, joy, and desire of young people to ask deep questions about our faith and to see them worship our Lord is a refreshing witness in today’s secular culture.”
Totus Tuus, a Latin phrase meaning “Totally Yours,” was the motto of St. Pope John Paul II. It signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through Mary. It also expresses our effort to give our all to every young person we encounter. Through the teams’ examples of joy and service, the youth see that these men and women are on fire with the Catholic faith and long for the same thing in their lives.
