QUINCY - Edwin C. Schulte, father of Father Mark Schulte, pastor of St. Aloysius Parish in Springfield, died May 6 at his home in Quincy, age 83.
He was born on Dec. 3, 1925, in Quincy, a son of Alois and Thecla (Mueller) Schulte, Sr. He married Vivian Frericks on May 8, 1948 in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Quincy.
He attended Independence Grade School in the Quincy area and served in the United States Army in World War II. He was a dairy employee at Prairie Farms Dairy from 1947 until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Schulte was a member of St. Francis Solanus Parish and the Marian Movement of Priests.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Bernard, Herman, Francis, and Albert Schulte along with Joseph and Roy Schulte who both died in infancy; and three sisters, Dora "Sis" Kemner, Clara Ledig and Marjorie Lesones Stark.
Surviving are his wife Vivian; nine children, Paula E. Leak of Chicago, Laurian J. Schulte of Orange, Mass., Father Mark A. Schulte of Springfield, Francis R. Schulte of Quincy, Bradley A. Schulte of Fowler, Claudia A. Coggeshall of Camp Point, Roch G. Schulte of Quincy, Matthew J. Schulte of Ursa, and Brother Aaron J. Schulte, OCSO, of Trappist, Ky. 21 grandchildren; three brothers, Virgil Schulte, Alois Schulte, Jr., and Donald Schulte; one sister, Marie Degitz; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives also survive.
The funeral Mass was held May 11 in St. Francis Solanus Church, with Father Schulte presiding. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Payson American Legion.
