Obituary - Sister Sophie Marie Meehan, CDP

She was born Juliana Meehan on Oct. 7, 1934, in Venice in Madison County to William and Sophia Meehan. She entered the Sisters of Divine Providence in St. Louis in 1949 and professed her final vows in 1956. She celebrated her 60th jubilee with the Divine Providence community this year, along with her lifelong friend, Sister Marguerite Luddon, CDP, who entered the community with her. Sister Sophie’s blood sister, Sister Emily Meehan, CDP, followed her into the Divine Providence community, entering in 1956.

Sister Sophie Marie taught in area Catholic schools for 43 years, 27 of them at Mount Providence, the school operated by the Sisters of Divine Providence in Normandy, Mo. Her most recent teaching assignment was at Sacred Heart School in Florissant, Mo., where she ministered until 1999.

In addition to Mount Providence and Sacred Heart Schools, Sister Sophie Marie taught at St. Stanislaus School in Wardsville, Mo., Ascension School in Normandy, Mo., St. John School in Imperial, Mo., St. Mary’s School in Brussels, Divine Providence School in Westchester, Mo., and Mary Queen of the Universe School in Lemay, Mo.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 17 at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Catholic Church in Florissant. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Florissant.

Sister Sophie Marie was devoted to the Blessed Mother and prayed the prayer of the Green Scapular throughout the day: “Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us, now and at the hour of our death.”

Sister Sophie Marie was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Bill (Nadine) Meehan, John (Mildred) Meehan and Glen Meehan. In addition to Sister Emily, Sister Sophie Marie is survived by her sisters Dolores Meehan, Odilia (Leo) DeCampi and Mary (Bob) Flick, brother Joe (Judy) Meehan, sister-in-law Carol Meehan, many cousins, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, friends and hundreds of Sisters of Divine Providence and Divine Providence Associates.
